North Brunswick plays for state title, former head coach

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The North Brunswick Scorpions baseball team is swinging for their first state championship since 1998, but their trip to Zebulon could have gone foul many times throughout the long season.

The team was thrown a curveball in March when head coach Randy Fennell was forced to resign earlier this season. The team has since caught fire and many of the players say they are dedicating their performance to Coach Fennell.

“I really want to support him and bring it home for him,” said senior Jacob Shumate.

“We’ll do everything like he would want and play like he would want us to play and hold our heads high no matter what,” said senior Garrett Williams. “Just play good old North Brunswick baseball.”

Fennell’s resignation forced the Scorpions to mature quickly, and after some early struggles opponents soon felt the sting of the teams bond.

“We made a commitment to not let anything hold us back,” said Shumate. “I really think we have worked and stayed more of a family and as a team more than any other team I’ve ever been on.”

“We’ve been playing since we were 12 years old together and this is what we’ve always looked forward to in high school is the high school state championship,” said Williams. “We hope we can go out there and do it today.”

Win or lose interim coach Dustin Medlin says he wants his boys to swing for the fences and realize that his moment goes far beyond the diamond.

“I want them to enjoy every moment of it because for the seniors they’ll never come back and for our sophomores and juniors you never know if you’re ever going to get this opportunity again,” said interim coach Dustin Medlin. “I never know if I’ll ever get this opportunity again as a coach. I want them to soak it in and I want them to enjoy it but at the same time I want them to remember why we’re there.”

“If we win a state championship that’s forever so I this will definitely be one of the biggest memories of my life,” said Shumate.
