Walmart theft leads police to drug bust


ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — Elizabethtown Police say a report of a theft from Walmart led them to arrest two women on other charges.

Police say around 2 p.m. Monday they responded to the call at Walmart on West Broad Street. Officers found the two suspects, Sarah Celeste Monroe, 36, of Bladenboro and Erika Michelle Covington, 40, of Elizabethtown, outside the store.

Police say they found the stolen merchandise in their pocketbooks. Officers say they also found a variety of pills inside Monroe’s pocketbook of, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine and amphet salts.

Police say both women also had outstanding warrants.

Monroe is charged with misdemeanor larceny, two counts of felony trafficking of opium and failure to appear. She is in the Bladen Co. Jail under $6,500 secured bond.

Covington is charged with misdemeanor larceny and failure to appear. She is out of jail on $1,000 secured bond.
