WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As we told you last week, Wilmington’s Brigade Boys & Girls Club won a $50,000 grant as part of a national contest. Today the club, which serves more than 1,300 kids in New Hanover and Pender counties, celebrated.

The first-ever Lincoln’s Legacy Award from Lincoln Financial recognizes and invests in nonprofit organizations whose principles and programs advance Abraham Lincoln’s legacy of freedom and opportunity through education.

Brigade Executive Director Jeff Green says it was the community that voted and helped them seal the deal.

“$50,000 will help to support our academic achievement program, keep us up-to-date with technology, with supplies, with staffing that we need to do our homework help assistance program each afternoon,” Green said.

Green says the $50,000 is a Christmas miracle for the organization.

Representatives from Lincoln Financial were unable to attend the celebration, because they were snowed in in Philadelphia, but they did provide everything Brigade needed for the party.
