Economic impact study ordered for Carolina Beach Inlet

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) – Nearly $8,000 will flow toward an economic impact study of the Carolina Beach inlet.

Tuesday night the Carolina Beach Town Council, Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, and Kure Beach all contributed funds to an economic impact study that they hope will inspire other towns in New Hanover County to help out with dredging costs.

Carolina Beach Inlet Association President Robert Schoonmaker says it should be a no brainer for local governments.

“For every dollar invested into the Carolina Beach Inlet you get a $16 return on that,” said Robert Schoonmaker. “You’re really investing in coastal infrastructure and by putting a dollar in you’re getting $16 out. It’s a no brainer for me and hopefully for the rest of the county.”

State and federal officials recently agreed to begin dredging shallow draft inlets again, so boats can move more easily through their shallow waters.

Local governments must provide half of the cost of shallow inlet dredging.
