WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some New Hanover County kindergarteners may soon learn Mandarin Chinese.

Forest Hills Global Elementary School looks to add the option for 20 students next school year.

The school currently teaches Spanish immersion classes for first through third grades. Classes like these only speak and read English outside the main classroom.

Principal Deborah Greenwood says they’ve seen positive results from immersion students.

“children just learn, and they love it, and that’s what we want; we want the kids to learn,” Greenwood said. “It’s just giving them a greater advantage for when they graduate and go out into the job market. They will have a second language, which makes it awesome in this global society that we live in.”

Greenwood says after the immersion class, students speak and read the second language fluently.

The application deadline for the Mandarin Chinese immersion class is March 1.
