WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As sales continue to decline, Radio Shack has decided to close more than 1,000 stores.

The news comes just weeks after the company spent millions of dollars on a Super Bowl ad. The 55-second ad, which poked fun at the chain’s lack of change over the years, was intended to help boost revenue for Radio Shack, which used to be one of the industry leaders in electronics.

Tuesday, the company announced it plans to close 1,100 stores across the country.

Customers say they are not surprised by the news.

“You can get a lot offline, which is a lot cheaper, and the way that people ship nowadays, you can get stuff just as quick as running right into the store, so I am not surprised,” Mike Langston said.

Langston is an engineer at a Wilmington radio station. He says he uses radio shack to pick up last-minute supplies.

“Sometimes we need audio adapters. Sometimes ethernet stuff to make the internet connections work, longer cables and stuff that we just don’t have inside of the station that we might have to make to make it work,” he said.

There are six radio shack locations in our area, including four in Wilmington. Customers say it’s nice to know if they cannot find what they need at one store there is always another one just around the corner.

“I just had to get an upgrade,” said Tasha Johnson, after she visited the Radio Shack on S. College Rd. and the one about a mile away on Market St. today. “They were both in line with each other, and one of the stores didn’t have what I needed, so I just came here.”

But now those options, too, mght be a thing of the past.

We tried to reach out to a representative for Radio Shack, but our calls have not been returned. The company has not yet announced which stores will close.
