RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Efforts by the Obama administration and more than 100 North Carolina hospitals, community- and safety-net organizations to get people to sign up for subsidized private health insurance are reaching the end.

Monday was the deadline for people who lack health insurance to buy coverage or face a penalty. Advocates guided hundreds of people through the details of in-person sign ups at daily events statewide in the final week.

Three dozen people waited Monday in the fellowship hall of a Baptist church in Raleigh for a turn with a computer-equipped guide offering personalized advice on the best coverage deals.

Thousands of others missed the deadline. They didn’t know about the requirement to buy health insurance, couldn’t afford it despite the subsidies, or rejected being told to buy coverage.
