WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A federal judge’s decision to strike down gay marriage in North Carolina came down too late Friday afternoon for gay couples in our area to get marriage licenses and get married, but several couples wasted no time this morning.
Charles Smith and Ralphie Guappone became the first same-sex couple to get married in New Hanover County. They were among four couples who lined up early outside the Register of Deeds office in downtown Wilmington to get marriage licenses.
Smith and Guappone tied the knot around 8:30 a.m. with the help of a minister who volunteered to do the ceremony in the Register of Deeds office.
