WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The boat has just arrived back in the Port City, and this weekend the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence celebrates its 50th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, one Wilmington restaurant has crafted a very special beer.
It’s called the Diligence Ale, an 80 shilling scotch ale aged for over a year in a cognac barrel. Beermaster Kevin Kozak says this is a unique beer for a very special event.
“We’re one of fourteen Coast Guard cities in the US, and its the 50th anniversary for the Diligence, which we love. It’s great to look at down here in downtown so we figured why not do a beer to celebrate the 50th anniversary,” Kozak said.
Kozak says the beer is limited with only three kegs available. He says the Diligence ale will be tapped Friday, just in time for Veteran’s Day weekend.
Over the weekend, the public can tour the Diligence to experience what life is like on the coast guard cutter.
A formal ceremony recognizing the 50 years of service will be held Tuesday November 11 at the Coast Guard Moorings at 2 p.m.
