DUPLIN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace says officials are looking for a man in connection with an execution-style murder. The suspect was already charged with a 2012 murder in New Hanover County, and according to court records the victim was set to be a witness.

Sheriff Wallace says a warrant is out for Nashid Porter of Wallace in connection with the death of Obediah Hester, 27, of Wilmington. Wallace said the killing took place last night between Wallace and Harrells in the 1000 block of Wards Road.

In September 2012, Porter was charged in the murder of Brian Theodus Grant in the Creekwood community in July. US Marshals arrested Porter in Fayetteville. In December 2012, Porter was indicted for first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon and given a $10,000 secured bond. That bond was later changed to $360,000 unsecured.

In February 2014, Judge W. Allen Cobb Jr. signed off on a pre-trial release for Porter, which included a $10,000 unsecured bond and electronic monitoring. Porter was also ordered to have no contact with witnesses. According to court records, Hester was named as a key witness in Porter’s murder trial. Records also show the defense had asked for access to Hester’s mental health record claiming he was schizophrenic and questioning the integrity of his testimony.

According to a warrant, last night around 8:56 the master tamper alert on Porter’s GPS monitoring device went off near 128 James Spencer Ln. in Wallace. Duplin County deputies later found the device there, but don’t know where Porter is. That led to a warrant for Porter’s arrest from New Hanover County for violating his pre-trial release, which carries a $1 million bond.

District Attorney Ben David said he could not comment on the pending investigation and Porter’s release, but said that Porter’s trial for the 2012 murder was set for January 20, 2015.
