WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Friday marked the return of Chasity Melvin to WWAY’s Full Court Press. The NC State Hall of Famer made a guest appearance on Friday. This season’s analyst, Kevin Schneider, had a previous basketball commitment to fulfill. We showcased a slew of basketball action on the Full Court Press. This included game action from Hoggard-New Hanover, Whiteville-East Columbus and much more!

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Johnnie Glaspie rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff for another score to lead Wallace-Rose Hill past Boonville Starmount 34-21 on Friday night in the Class 1-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Glaspie, the game MVP, finished with 113 yards rushing while Keyshawn Canady rushed for 119 yards and a 72-yard touchdown to help the Bulldogs (15-1) earn their fourth state title and second in five years.

Glaspie returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown and scored on runs of 23 and 1 yard. His final TD gave Wallace-Rose Hill its largest lead at 34-14 midway through the third quarter.

Wallace-Rose Hill rushed 50 times for 320 yards and attempted only one pass.

John Johnson rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown and Zach Freed returned a fumble 51 yards for a score for Boonville Starmount (12-4), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) – Mike Hughes threw for two touchdowns and ran for 85 yards to help New Bern beat Charlotte Catholic 23-15 on Friday night in the Class 4-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Hughes was named the game’s most valuable player for the Bears (16-0), who won their third state title. He threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Soileau late in the first half, then had a 60-yard scoring toss to Rasheed McCoy for a 23-7 lead late in the third quarter.

Jaret Anderson ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars (14-2), the last coming to cut the deficit to 23-15 with 7:58 left. Catholic got one more possession, but Shamond Squires intercepted a pass from John Walton near midfield with 1:51 left to allow New Bern to run out the clock.

Charlotte Catholic was going for its fourth state title and first since 2005.
