NEW DETAILS: Police say shooting victim spotted walking with wound

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating a shooting they say sent a man to the hospital after a witness spotted him bleeding on the side of the road.

Police say just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a driver noticed the injured victim walking near the shoulder in the 4300 block Carolina Beach Road. Officers say the witness called 911, and the man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the leg.

When police caught up with the man at the hospital, they say he told officers that two men jumped him, shot him in the leg and then robbed him. Police also say the man told them one of the suspects had long dreads, and that they drove off in a red car.

Police say though the crime was reported to have happened close to Codington Elementary School, they believe the shooting actually occurred in the woods nearby. Officers say they searched the area, but couldn’t find any suspects or a crime scene. WPD says the man is expected to be OK.
