BEAUFORT, SC (AP) — A report by an advocacy group says twice the jobs and more energy can be generated in the Carolinas by developing offshore wind technology than by drilling for fossil fuels in the ocean.

The report released Wednesday by the group Oceana also says wind energy will better benefit residents. It says while oil and natural gas are shipped worldwide, electricity from wind turbines will be used locally.

The report says the Carolinas have the largest offshore wind resources on the East Coast. It warns oil spills could threaten coastal resorts.

But Andy Radford of the American Petroleum Institute said it’s unclear how much fossil fuel is offshore until new surveys are conducted. He says fisheries and tourism have thrived along with offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico for decades.
