Former West Bladen Knight D.J. Mason continues to shine for Campbell

    BUIES CREEK, NC (CAMPBELL) — Javonte Green scored 21 points and Radford defeated Campbell 72-55 Thursday night at Gore Arena.

    The Highlanders (11-7, 2-3 Big South) won their second-straight game thanks in part to a 20-3 run midway through the second half. Green hit 7-of-12 from the field, 7-of-8 from the line and pulled down eight rebounds. Brandon Holcomb added 14 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots for Radford, which shot 55.8 percent from the field and scored 20 points off 13 Campbell turnovers.

    D.J. Mason led Campbell (7-10, 1-4) with 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting and seven rebounds. Freshman Curtis Phillips added 12 points in his first career start for the Camels, who shot 39 percent from the floor.

    The Camels trailed by 13 at the break (32-19), but made their first six shots of the second half. Mason hit three shots in a 13-4 spurt and CU cut the gap to 38-34 on Mason’s bucket with 14:55 to go.



    However, Radford responded with its 20-3 burst and extended the lead to 64-41 with 4:02 to play after making 10-straight shots from the field.

    Radford closed the first half on a 9-0 run as CU was scoreless over the final 5:32 of the period. Green tallied 8 of his 15 first-half points in a 10-0 burst midway through the period. Radford netted 24 points from field goals in the paint and shooting 12-of-23 (.522) from the floor overall. RU missed all 7 of his first-half 3-point attempts, but canned 8-of-10 from the line.

    Campbell shot just 8-of-26 from the field (.308) in the opening period, made 2-of-9 threes and 1-of-2 from the stripe.

    The Camels conclude their three-game home stand Saturday with a 4 p.m. start on ESPN3 against UNC Asheville.
