WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tax season is in full swing, and unfortunately, that means scammers are out in force too. A Wilmington woman is thankful she knew the signs.
Peggy O’Leary said she got the phone call over the weekend. She didn’t answer the first one but did the second time around and it was someone calling to tell her she owed money to the IRS. If she didn’t pay them money she owed, she’d be arrested. She knew she didn’t owe the IRS any money but she says she worries for someone who might fall for the scam.
“A lot of people even though they know that they don’t owe the IRS money they feel uncomfortable and think maybe I do and I don’t remember,” O’Leary said.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says if someone is asking for money over the phone they’re probably up to no good. They say the best thing you can do is know your finances and trust your instincts.
