Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — UNCW Interim Chancellor Bill Sederburg has decided to give the school's track and cross country teams and their supporters time to raise enough money to keep the program running.
The UNCW track and field team final got the chance they've been fighting for over the last several months, but UNCW officials says it won't be easy.
After an outpouring of support and donations, a portion of the $330,000 goal has already been met and it continues to grow today. Doctor Roy Love who started the Save UNCW Track fundraising group says they have raised more than 140,000 dollars so far.
This afternoon, practice was back to normal on the track that the university says "needs repairs". "The track needs to be resurfaced and that could cost up to 750,000," said Head Coach Jim Sprecher.
Sprecher said coaches are optimistic people and never gave up hope. "We were always holding out that hope that they would be a chance to save it and now that we are provide with that opportunity. We are ecstatic," he said.
Sprecher also added he's very proud of his team and is glad he can continue to coach talented athletes.
Love says, they plan to do raise money by some events, but mainly through donors that donate through Save UNCW Track.
