WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — About 100 young women from New Hanover and Pender County middle schools went to UNCW for GE Hitachi’s seventh annual “Girls in Technology Summit.”
Girls were put into teams and tasked with finding creative solutions to real-world engineering problems. GE Hitachi Project Manager Ashley Culler says it’s important to encourage girls in science in math, because the fields are currently so heavily-dominated by men.
“Engineering is about creativity and problem solving,” Culler said. “And young girls are so good at that. Well really, girls in general, they’re creative and they think outside the box. So we really want to show them that they can use those skills and how to apply them in the real world.”
Culler says every year before the summit, GE Hitachi presents the same problem with the girls and their team of engineers, and every year the girls’ solutions beat the professionals because they think of things the engineering team doesn’t.
