WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of kids are giving back to those who fight for our freedom.
The Spartan Basketball Association and Once Upon a Child Foundation teamed up to adopt an infantry unit called Alpha Company. The unit of troops are out of Camp Lejeune who left for Afghanistan in January and plan to be there for more than a year.
Saturday, the organizations gathered and made care packages to send to those men.
Spartan Basketball Volunteer Cameron Davenport said, “We just wanted them to know that there are people here that care and thankful for what they are doing for our country and for our freedom. We are sending cards letting them know that we are praying for them and that we are thinking about them.”
Almost every family in the organizations donated the food to send the troops like soup, beef jerky, and candy.
Spartan Basketball Association says this was their first time sending care packages, but plan to send things every month until the men are back home.
