Police: 40 bags of pot in attempted murder, gun battle suspect’s underwear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man is behind bars facing several charges after police say they found 40 bags of marijuana in his underwear during a traffic stop in the Creekwood area over the weekend.

Wilmington Police say just after 9 p.m. Saturday, officers pulled over a car with no tag lights in the 300 block of Hearst Street. They say the driver, Wakeel Rasheed Stewart, 20, was unable to provide police with an ID.

That’s when officers say they smelled a strong odor of pot coming from the car. Police searched the car and found Stewart already had outstanding warrants for several drug and traffic charges, among others.

During the search, officers found 40 bags of marijuana in Stewart’s underwear. Police say he now faces charges for both possession and conspiracy to sell and deliver drugs, driving with a revoked license, and resisting arrest. Stewart was booked in jail under more than $250,000 bond.

Stewart is no stranger to trouble. In 2013 he was charged with attempted murder after a teen was shot at while riding his bike. Last fall, police arrested Stewart for what they called a running gun battle through Wilmington.
