WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The deadline is approaching for folks hoping to save UNCW track. The program was cut months ago, but if they can raise enough money they’ll be able to save the program for the upcoming year
They have several fundraisers planned this month and so far have raised $130-thousand. Interim Chancellor Bill Sederberg gave the folks involved with the organization, “Save UNCW track,” until June 1st to raise $250-thousand. That would be enough to save the track and field program for the upcoming school year.
The chairman of save UNCW track told us Thursday afternoon that over half way to their goal they have a long way to go but it is doable. He thinks they’ll reach their goal thanks to the community.
“It feels great, and we felt that from the beginning that there was a great deal of support for track. Not only track but for diversity and for student athletes in this community,” said Dr. Roy Love, Chairman of “Save UNCW Track”.
There has been a groundswell of support for them too from individuals to local businesses, all chipping in to help. That June first deadline is fast approaching. If the money is not raised by then, UNCW’s track and field program will likely be gone for the foreseeable future.
