BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Burgaw’s police chief has been suspended for two weeks while her department is “reviewed.”
According to a news release from Burgaw Town Manager Chad McEwen, Chief Montrina Sutton’s suspension is disciplinary related. In addition, following a review of the department’s organizational structure, the major and captain positions will be eliminated.
McEwen says former Police Chief Wayne Briley will serve as acting administrative police chief.
“It is the opinions of the Mayor, Board of Commissioners, and Town Manager that the current staffing of the police department places too much focus on administrative and command level positions rather than patrol level positions,” the release said. “By refocusing the police department’s resources on patrol level positions, we believe a higher level of service can be provided to the residents through greater efficiency within the department.”
