Town releases details about police chief suspension, cut positions

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A spokesperson with the Town of Burgaw has released a few new details about the suspension of the town’s police chief and the decision to cut positions within the police department.

Town Manager Chad McEwen announced Monday night Chief Montrina Sutton has been suspended until May 4; on the day that suspension ends, two positions will also end. Major Lisa Fields, who has been with the department since 1997, and Captain Michael Garrison, who has been with the department for about four months, will both be fired. The town manager says the current staffing of the police department places too much focus on administrative and command level positions rather than patrol-level positions.

In regards to the chief’s suspension, town officials will only say it was due to the violation of the Town of Burgaw Personnel Policy. They would not explain what is in that policy and the copy of the policy was not provided or available online. Town officials add no criminal investigation is underway.

Former Police Chief Wayne Briley is serving as acting administrative police chief. Sutton was named chief in 2013.
