MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WWAY) — Meteorologists are turning their attention to the tropics early in the season, as an area of low pressure organizes near Florida.
Hurricane experts and Hurricane Hunters met in Myrtle Beach today to discuss the upcoming season. National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Rick Knabb said one common theme in the discussion was awareness. Experts urge people living in coastal locations to focus less on the classification of a system and more on preparing for the possible impacts.
“A great, perfectly accurate forecast is not going to achieve its full potential if it, first, isn’t communicated very clearly, and then understood and acted upon,” Knabb said. “And that is where hurricane preparedness comes in.”
Knabb said he encourages people to plan for the next hurricane before it happens and to consider flood planes and evacuation plans. He also hopes people will familiarize themselves with new warning products, such as the storm surge forecast.
