Wilmington synagogue welcomes area’s first female rabbi

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The new rabbi of a Wilmington synagogue is making history. Rabbi Julie Kozlow will be the first woman to serve as a Jewish spiritual leader in southeastern North Carolina.

Rabbi Kozlow will take over at B’nai Israel on July 1. She succeeds Rabbi Robert Waxman, who is retiring.

Rabbi Kozlow comes to Wilmington from Greenville, SC. She was ordained in 2007 at the Academy for Jewish Religion in Los Angeles. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Judaic Studies and two Master of Arts degrees in Rabbinics. In addition to experience as a pulpit rabbi for congregations in California, New Orleans and Mexico City, she is also an experienced teacher with a real passion for youth education, and holds a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education.

Kozlow will celebrate her formal installation at B’nai Israel August 21.
