WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Facebook comments from a New Hanover County School Board member have some calling for her resignation. The comments Tammy Covil made surfaced yesterday, and she’s since deleted them, but the fallout continues.
Covil posted on Facebook a comment about her thoughts on gay marriage.
“Gay marriage isn’t about marriage rights at all, it’s about forcing others to accept a perverted lifestyle choice as “normal.””
Her assertion that being gay is perverted has some folks fired up.
“I hate to think of our students who are struggling you know with their sexual identity, you know if they are discriminated against or bullied against, know that they don’t have a champion in Mrs. Covil,” said Elizabeth Redenbaugh, the new chair of the New Hanover County Democratic Party. “Someone who has made up their mind that they consider someone who is gay perverted, they’re not going to stand up for those students.”
We tried all day to contact Covil by email, telephone and even going to her house. In fact, she answered the phone one time and when our reporter told her who he was, she hung up.
“The New Hanover County Republican Party respects everyone’s right to their own opinions, including Mrs. Covil and all elected officials. The Republican Party is a large and diverse group with many schools of thought,” said Michael Franklin in a statement. Franklin is the newly appointed chair of the New Hanover County Republican Party.
Folks on Facebook, though, are increasingly concerned. A group formed Wednesday afternoon calls for her resignation. Redenbaugh stops short of that.
“I’d like to see an apology from Mrs. Covil. I think this community needs to know that our school board members and our elected officials stand by our students,” said Redenbaugh. She went on to call this a teachable moment, and said voters should make their opinion heard on this issue at the ballot box.
