WILMINGTON, NC (StarNews) — A Duplin County man charged in a 2012 Wilmington killing and in the November slaying of a witness was removed from a New Hanover County courtroom Wednesday after making several outbursts in which he said he fired his court-appointed capital defender.

Nashid Porter, 37, protested Judge Phyllis Gorham’s statement that he was to speak through his attorney, Nora Hargrove, during a hearing to determine if a witness would be allowed to testify in advance of the murder trial. The prosecution requested the unusual preservation of the witness’ testimony in light of the killing of Obediah Hester IV in November, and the natural death of another witness in April.

“That’s not my attorney. … I can fire her as my attorney. I fired her,” Porter said several times, even after being warned by Gorham to be quiet or he’d have to leave the courtroom.
