CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — A 57-year-old North Charleston man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting a man after an argument over a thrown beer.
Solicitor Scarlett Wilson issued a release that Vaughn Hilliard was found guilty Wednesday in the death of 46-year-old Troy Cason in September 2013. Assistant solicitor Culver Kidd says Hilliard admitted to the shooting, but claimed self-defense.
Cason’s girlfriend told police she and Cason were speaking to two other people on Sept. 7, 2013, when one of whom threw a beer on the ground. Hilliard came around the corner of a trailer and began arguing with Cason because he thought the victim threw beer. Cason pushed Hilliard to the ground. Hilliard went to get a rifle and shot him. Cason died two days later.
