Prayer vigil set to remember Charleston shooting victims

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Community members are invited to a prayer vigil tonight to remember the shooting victims killed in a Charleston church.

New Hanover County NAACP Director Deborah Maxwell said the vigil will be held at St. Stephen AME Church at 7:30 p.m. That church is located on Red Cross Street in Downtown Wilmington. Rev. Wayne Johnson Sr. is organizing the vigil.

“My church is historic St. Stephen, which will be 150 years old in September, and is the Mother Church for this area,” Maxwell said. “The AME community here is in shock.”

Rev. Johnson told WWAY’s Taylor Yakowenko two of the victims were friends but would not go into further details considering the identities were not released at the time.
