CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — About 200 lifeguards from across the region are competing for a regional title.
For the first time in five years, Carolina Beach is hosting the South Atlantic Life Saving Association Regional Championships. SALA President Tom Gill said lifeguards from Florida to Virginia are competing in a wide-variety of events that could qualify them for the national competition.
“You’re competing against the best lifeguards and some of the best swimmers from around the region and from around the country, and every event is tough,” Gill said. “Every event has just a little bit of lifeguarding skill that we’re trying to promote that we want the people to get better at so they are better at their jobs when they are back on the lifeguard stand at home.”
The competition continues tomorrow and Gill said one event to see is something similar to musical chairs but lifeguard-style. The day starts at 8 a.m. at Hamlet Avenue.
