Ashley’s Jeff Turner looks to focus on practice as football season approaches

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Last year the Ashley Screaming Eagles came up empty in the win column under previous head coach Mike Propst. Jeff Turner is the new head coach at Ashley High School. Turner had been Hoggard’s defensive coordinator since 2005 prior to the move down Carolina Beach Road. At Ashley he’ll have a say on both sides of the ball. “I am in charge of both. I am overseeing both,” Turner told us. “I have a run game and a pass game coordinator. I really have great assistants.”

Ashley does not have a strong tradition in football. In fact they have a long string of losing seasons. Jeff Turner is out to change that. “We’re trying to build something and we’re asking them to something that they haven’t really done before is a change. Like, hey we’re gonna work out in the summer kind of thing and guess what, we may have two a days and that kind of thing and they’re not really used to that. These kids want to learn. They want to be taught how to play football and that’s really the gratifying part for me. We are focused on the present and the future. All we’re doing is worrying about is what we do at practice and what we can control right now and we’ll see what happens.”
