WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Have you noticed that about the only thing in pumpkin pie flavor not on sale right now is pie?
Perhaps that’s emblematic of a couple of trends in the consumer world right now tied to everyone’s favorite trendy fall treats.
According to Nielsen the pumpkin flavor trend continues to grow and shows little sign of slowing. Nielsen reports that last year, 37 percent of US consumers purchased a pumpkin-flavored product, which translated to $361 million in sales in the last year alone. That’s up 79 percent since 2011.
Pie filling continues to be the leading pumpkin product with about $135 million in sales followed by cream ($48 million) and coffee ($33 million). Newer products on the market include everything from gum and oral hygiene items to dog food! Yes, even your pooch can get in on the pumpkin mania.
Despite all this pumpkinpallooza, sales of fresh pumpkins have actually been declining. Nielsen says sale losses in 2011, 2013 and 2014 accounted for 8.6 million fewer pumpkins sold.
