The Waccamaw Fire & Rescue Department

WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — Just a couple of days after a fire chief was fired and several of his volunteer firefighters resigned, the Waccamaw Volunteer Fire Department resumed daytime staffing Tuesday.

Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said following the Friday meeting, fire officials were assessing what volunteers were left and replacing their part-time staffing that left. The department was never officially closed, he said. It resumed daytime operations, which he said typically means paid staffers work in the building to supplement the volunteers. Garner said on Monday that emergency calls were being answered and there could be some slight delays in response times.

Greg Warren was named interim chief following Jason Coveyou’s firing.

If calls are being answered explain why a vehicle accident with children in the vehicle not responded to while the crew were at the building while waiting there for locks to be changed. The calls are more important than the locks. The new crew need to get their priorities in check. I have no confidence in this new crew. The board should have left good enough alone. They had a good crew old there. Instead of dismissing a good chief and loosing all their staff they should have stood back and reevaluated themselves. The problem is the board not the members they lost.
