TEAM OF THE WEEK: Ashley High snaps 17-game losing skid

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Every Wednesday during the high school football season we recognize a local team with our team of the week award. Our decision to honor Ashley High was relatively easy. Needless to say, it’s been a long time coming.

Last season was a season to forget for Ashley. They lost every football game they played. Jeff Turner was not the Ashley coach then, but Turner is the head coach now. The Screaming Eagles came close to beating White Oak in the season opener. Ashley had a chance to beat Swansboro and Fairmont, but the losing streak was not snapped until Friday; therefore, the 17-game losing streak is now history. In fact Ashley had to come from behind to beat Westover 26 to 24. Caleb Parker scored two touchdowns, including the game winner with just seconds to spare. “It was great. We’ve been working so hard,” Caleb Parker told us. “I think it was just a culmination of like all the hard work that we’ve put in. It was cool, I really trusted in my o-line. Those guys were blocking all night.”

Qadhafi used to play at Hoggard where Jeff Turner previously coached. Qadhafi Turner turned out to be the only Hoggard player to follow Jeff Turner to Ashley. “Coach was preaching all week to go out there and play your hardest and play as team and that’s what we did,” Qadhafi said. “11 together as 1.”

Jeff Turner is the third head coach in as many years at Ashley. Along with preaching patience and dedication, he brings stability to his team. “I am proud of them and they deserve it,” Turner said. “It was great to get that win and just to see that with the kids and it’s just envigorating for them and the community and everyone being happy. It’s been long overdue.”

Senior D.C. Russ added “We’re happy about it, but it’s now in the past and we’re working hard for the next one. The conference season is just a day or two away and we’re gonna be ready.” With that let’s give it for this week’s WWAY-Logo Shoppe Team of the Week: The Ashley Screaming Eagles.
