CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A website recently released a list of the top ten drunkest cities in North Carolina and two local beach towns in our area were on it.
According to the website roadsnacks.net, Carolina Beach and Oak Island are some of the top places in the state where people enjoy a few too many of these. The site says they base the list on the number of bars and pubs, wineries and liquor stores per capita — as well as divorce rate, and each city’s drunk related tweets within the last week.
“I don’t think it could be anymore inaccurate,” Mayor Dan Wilcox said. “This is a family beach town. We have worked hard to keep it a family beach down, but families come in all shapes and sizes. Some families like to go out and have drinks, dance and have fun so we try to have a good balance here.”
Carolina Beach restaurant owner Gibby Gibson agreed the list isn’t a fair evaluation.
“In the summer we have tourism and a lot of folks coming down here and a lot of college kids come down to the beach, and yes there’s a lot of alcohol and stuff going on then but in the off season when it’s just the locals and everything down here I don’t believe it’s a fair assessment,” Gibson said.
Mayor Wilcox said it’s a town of 6,000 residents that grows six times for three months out of the year. He said the area has enough bars, restaurants and stores to accommodate that influx, so that’s why it’s at the top of the list.
As far as Gibson is concerned, Carolina Beach is a great place to live and/or visit.
“During summer, the beach is a fun place to come to — especially Carolina Beach,” Gibson said.
