Elections board implements changes after voters’ ballots made public

NEW HANOVER, COUNTY (WWAY) — As candidates gear up for Election Day the New Hanover County Board of Elections has implemented some changes. Last year absentee ballots ended up in the public email system.

Elections Director Derek Bowens said New Hanover County removed the directors’ emails from the public server. Also now county staff is required to check the county’s public sites Tuesdays and Thursdays to make sure private information isn’t put up on a public county site.

“That is confidential information that of course should always be protected by this office, and so we are doing everything possible, to ensure that it continues and we are doing it,” said Bowens.

The Elections Board has begun accepting absentee ballots. Bowens said they do not expect to have fewer absentee ballots because of last year’s problem.
