Reports of gunfire puts Wilmington schools on alert


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating reports of gunfire near schools downtown.

A WPD spokeswoman said a ShotSpotter activation came in around 12:40 p.m. near the intersection of Castle and 10th streets. No word on how many shots were fired and if any property damage was reported. Police activity was in the area of Queen Street near the intersection of 10th Street.

The alert put several schools in a shelter in place, which allows teaching to continue but restricts access to the schools.
