WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On the 77th anniversary of the infamous Orson Welles broadcast, Cape Fear Community College and WHQR will present a radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds.”
This version will not be exactly like the original radio play. The script, based on the 1898 novel by H.G. Wells, has been modernized and adapted to incorporate locations around the Cape Fear.
“Hopefully listeners will hear familiar landmarks and visualize what would be going on as if it were in their hometown,” performer Blake Howard said.
On Oct. 30, 1938, Welles directed and narrated a version of the story for the Mercury Theatre radio show. Listeners who missed a disclaimer at the top of the broadcast thought they were tuning in to actual news reports of a Martian invasion in New Jersey, leading to a panicked response from some listeners across the country.
This modernized performance will be broadcast live on WHQR Friday at 8 p.m. from the Studio Theater at CFCC’s Humanities and Fine Arts Center.
