OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A beach house in Oak Island is gone after a fire on Halloween night.
Oak Island Fire Chief Christopher Anselmo said the call came in just before 8:00 Saturday night from the 6600 block of West Beach Drive. He said the owners of the home went out trick-or-treating about 45 minutes before it started, so no one was in the home. The owners said they saw the smoke from a few block away, but did not realize it was their house at that time.
Anselmo said neighbors saw flames coming from the house, but by the time they called 911, the house was engulfed. He said the house was a total loss. Anselmo also said the house next door caught on fire, but crews were able to save it.
The chief said the Family lost a pet cat, but no family members were hurt. Anselmo said one firefighter went to the hospital with a minor injury from a fall, but he was later released.
The Chief said Red Cross was on standby, but this house was a vacation home for the owners.
The chief said it took several fire departments to help with the call including all four of their engines, support vehicles and two ladders. They also had help from Yaupon Beach, St. James , Southport , Sunny Point, and Sunset Harbor fire departments.
The chief said he ruled the cause of the fire undetermined.
