WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, and this year a new nationwide event is piggybacking on the shopping holiday and encouraging you to pick up a book… a comic book!
Local Comic Shop Day is an event to get people back to their local mom and pop comic shops. More than 300 comic book stores across the country are joining together and celebrating comics.
“It’s a perfect day for it,” Thomas Gilbert, owner of Wilmington’s Fanboy Comics, said. “It couldn’t be a better day.”
And in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, it’s the perfect way to promote an ever-growing niche business.
“We want to try and get people to spend locally in Wilmington, because that money stays in this community,” Gilbert said.
Big comic companies like Marvel and DC are helping to celebrate pop culture with special books you won’t find anywhere else.
“You can’t go buy it online. You can’t go to one of the big-box stores and pick it up. You have to come to your local comic shop and get it,” Gilbert said.
For 23 years Fanboy Comics has been bringing comic culture to the people of Wilmington, and Local Comic Shop Day is a chance to celebrate that and celebrate comic creators who live right here in the port city.
“We’ll have some local artists here that do local, self-published stuff,” Gilbert said. “Since it’s Local Comic Shop Day we wanted to center on local creators.”
We have small shops to thank for many of our pop culture icons today.
“Comic shops are where all this stuff started, where the trend of the big popular superhero movies and all the TV shows, and it all started in local comic shops,” Gilbert said.
The staff at Fanboy Comics says there really is a comic book for everyone. The store opens Saturday at 10 a.m. so you can get a jump start on your pop culture holiday shopping.
