Sarah Murphy returns to WWAY cancer free

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — When I announced my cancer diagnosis back in September, I left you saying “I am leaving on a jet plane, and I honestly don’t know when I’ll be back again.” Today I am overcome with emotion as I let you know my plane landed safely back in southeastern North Carolina yesterday, and I am back at work.

More often than not, I thought that plane would never arrive in Wilmington. I wish I could tell you I fought fearlessly and courageously, but that would be a lie. There were several pockets of unexpected turbulence along the journey that had me feeling there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you for helping me to find that light during those dark days. All your love and support were my crutches when I needed encouragement to get up and fight another day. Thank you to everyone who took the time to send a card, called our newsroom, wrote a message or sent an email.

This experience has been extremely humbling in so many ways and opened my eyes. Maybe my story is one of coming of age, but never forget that everyone around you is fighting their own battle. It is so important to have patience in life and not to pass judgments. There is enough negativity in the world. Try to see the good in every day, because at the end of it, there’s always something to be thankful for. Waking up each morning is truly a gift.
