KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — `The Kure Beach council unanimously voted to pass the resolution to oppose the offshore exploration. This makes Kure Beach the 100th East Coast beach community to officially oppose the practice.
The Kure Beach council was given a standing ovation after their unanimous decision to oppose seismic airgun blasting and offshore drilling.
Kyle Horton, who lives in Kure Beach, said she is proud of the town.
“I think it proves that we love our coast, I love being in this coastal community and I am really committed to protecting our quality of life here,” said Horton.
Those who oppose the practice are celebrating from locals to those working in Washington for the cause. Claire Douglass, climate and energy campaign director for Oceana, said taking a stand is vital when it comes to getting the federal government to listen.
“The communities realize they have a special voice, they are written into the law just like governors are, and they are using that voice and they are shouting,” said Douglass.
Douglass said this resolution comes just before a big lobbying effort later this month at the Coastal Voices Summit.
There was overwhelming support for the council’s decision Tuesday night but there is another side to the issue. We spoke with a Kure Beach resident who said there is a lot of misinformation about the practice and it is heavily regulated so there is economic growth and environmental protection.
