WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — UNCW freshman C.J. Bryce has been recognized by the Colonial Athletic Association as the league’s Rookie-of-the-Week for the third time after sparking the first-place Seahawks to a pair of victories over Delaware and Drexel last week.
A 6-5, 180-pound guard from Charlotte, Bryce averaged 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting an impressive 63.6 percent as the Seahawks climbed to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the CAA.
The silky-smooth Bryce opened the week by making 6-of-10 field goals and grabbing seven rebounds as the Seahawks completed a sweep of Delaware on Thursday at Trask Coliseum. He capped the outstanding week with 17 points, including 15 in a decisive second half, with seven rebounds in UNCW’s 77-71 triumph on Sunday in snow-laden Philadelphia.
For the week, Bryce converted 14-of-22 shots and his only three-point field goal attempt to help the Seahawks extend their winning streak to five games and pick up sweeps over the Blue Hens and Dragons.
“I’m extremely excited about CJ’s early success,” said Kevin Keatts, UNCW’s second-year coach. “He is a very talented young man who competes and works hard every day.” Bryce, a former North Mecklenburg High School standout, becomes UNCW’s 18th CAA Rookie-of-the-Week selection. Bryce joins Chad Tomko as the only Seahawk players to earn the award three times after nabbing the honor on Nov. 30, 2015, and Dec. 28, 2015.
