WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For almost 25 years, Cape Fear Shakespeare Limited has brought free performances to folks over at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. But city council might be changing their amphitheater policy and that could impact Shakespeare.
According to Aimee Schooley with Cape Fear Shakespeare, council was approached to consider making changes which might impact the non-profit’s ability to bring free plays to Greenfield Lake.
Schooley said they were surprised by the news and plan to go before council to ask that they not change the policy so that they might continue at that location.
“A Shakespeare festival is all well and good when rich people can go see it, but if you really want to share that rich literary history, you need to welcome all comers. And by making that free and subsisting on donations we’re able to do that,” said Schooley.
The concern comes from discussions to share the venue with other concerts. Schooley said they have also reached out to concert promoters to find a win-win for everyone.
