BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A student is facing charges for communicating threats about violent acts at a Brunswick County high school, according to a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

A Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said detectives charged Austin Ray Collins, 17, with two counts of communicating threats stemming from an incident that happened Wednesday.

Warrants show Collins, who is a senior at South Brunswick High School, threatened to hurt someone and damage property at the school. Collins also threatened to “shoot the school up,” according to warrants.

A sheriff’s spokeswoman said Collins was booked into the Brunswick County Jail late Thursday night and is out under custody release. A mother of a South Brunswick freshman said that wasn’t long enough.

“I believe they probably should have kept him in there for a little bit,” she said. “He said he was going to come and shoot the school up and he still might because he’s really mad now.”

Another parent, Doug McKenna, said the threats should be taken seriously and Collins should face punishment.

“I would say more than in jail, he should be in a place right now where he’s getting proper psychological care,” McKenna said.
