Suspicious package prompts evacuations, road closures

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County deputies investigated a suspicious package this morning at a Monkey Junction restaurant.

“He just came in and was like ‘oh, it’s a bomb in that box,’ and he’s been in the bathroom for a long time now,” said a Waffle House employee on the 911 call.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer, the package was found at the Waffle House on S. College Road this morning. Brewer said they evacuated the area around the restaurant as a precaution and closed the road so the bomb squad could come in and detonate the package.

He said deputies arrested Michael Nolan Leonard, 38, in connection with the suspicious package. Brewer said Leonard walked into the Waffle House this morning and said he had a bomb.

After the bomb squad dealt with the package, investigators searched a car in the restaurant parking lot that Brewer said belongs to Leonard.

“I believe it was just random, household items that were in the vehicle and that has been towed, so it can be processed at our unit,” said Brewer.

They’ve also determined the package had coins inside and nothing else. Leonard is now in jail under a $100,000 bond.
