WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UPDATE: leak has been stopped as of 12:37 p.m. Students have returned to the building.
Students at Ogden Elementary were evacuated around lunchtime today due to a gas leak.
According to a spokesman with the New Hanover County Dispatch, a 1.5 inch natural gas line was damaged during digging the the rear driveway of the school. The principal reported the evacuation around 11:30 a.m., according to a tweet from New Hanover County Schools.
New Hanover County Fire Services had multiple units on scene, along with assistance from the Wilmington Fire Department, Police Department and Piedmont Natural Gas. Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Rick Holliday, was also on scene. Piedmont Natural Gas stopped the leak about an hour later. The schools spokeswoman said the workers were on campus preparing a sinkhole and accidentally hit a gas line.
Officials ask that parents do not come to pick up their children at this time as they continue to deal with the situation. According to tweets, the students enjoyed the lovely weather during the repairs.
