UNCW won’t cancel classes for game despite petition

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thursday will be a big day at UNCW, as the men’s basketball team plays Duke in the NCAA tournament. Despite the excitement and a party planned on campus, classes will go on as scheduled.

A petition on Change.org called for the university to cancel classes so students could come together and watch the game, which tips at 12:15 p.m. Thursday. The school plans to host a game-viewing part in Trask Coliseum for students, faculty and staff, but it won’t cancel classes for the event.

“While we appreciate our students’ enthusiastic support of this athletic event, UNCW is first and foremost an academic institution,” read a UNCW statement in response to the petition, which had gathered nearly 3,500 supporters by midday. “As always, faculty have the discretion to cancel classes. However, canceling classes, even from only 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, would disrupt over 300 classes for over 7,800 students. We are all very excited to support our men’s team but must remain committed to our core mission of education.”

The Seahawks, who won the CAA Championship last week, are playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. They are the 13th seed in the West region and take on 4th-seeded Duke in a second-round game in Providence, RI. The Seahawks and Blue Devils have met only once before. Duke won that game in Durham in 1982.
