New Hope Baptist Youth Minster Connie Armstrong said Shane Simpson was a member at the church.

Armstrong says the church is hoping to let the neighborhood know there is a better way to live and that violence is not the answer.

“Young people today have so many things that they are dealing with at school and on the streets and they are under so much peer pressure,” Armstrong said. “They need to know there is an outlet and that there is someone that cares and some place where they can go.”

“The message we are trying to generate is that we don’t want to loose anymore youth,” Armstrong said. “We don’t want anyone to slip through the cracks of violence. We are praying for Wilmington that God will break the strong holes of violence.”

The theme of the block party was “We can make a change”. The event included live performances, specials guests, food, and games.
