State police say the children were found safe Tuesday and the suspect, 40-year-old Jose Melchor, of Clemmons, North Carolina, is in custody.

The search for the teens began about 10 p.m. Monday after state police were notified by the Winston-Salem Police Department about the abduction. Investigators believed Melchor was traveling west on Interstate 10 through the New Orleans area, possibly en route to Mexico. Troopers took positions along the interstate and found the group traveling in a 2004 Nissan pickup near the St. James/St. John the Baptist parish line.
