WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNCW Beach Volleyball team is preparing for their first-ever home tournament this weekend.
This is the first year a beach volleyball team has existed at UNCW.
“We’ve been training all of January and February to get ready for our season, and our first month of competitive beach season has been a lot of fun,” said UNCW Indoor and Beach Volleyball Head Coach Amy Bambenek.
“I think our success is going to grow with the more experience our players are getting,” Bambenek said. “For a first year program I’m getting a lot of compliments from coaches saying that we don’t play like a first year program. So that means a lot to me, because the colleges that have had beach volleyball for three and four years, you can tell that they’ve been playing for a long time.”
Bambenek said there is plenty of space for folks to come out this weekend and cheer on the Seahawks.
“We’re going to be playing all day on Saturday and Sunday,” Bambenek said. “And for anyone who doesn’t know much about beach volleyball, or someone who knows a lot about beach volleyball, we think it’ll be a fun event for everyone.”
The tournament kicks off Saturday, March 2nd at 9 a.m. at Dig and Dive on 3525 Lancelot Lane in Wilmington.
The first match will be played between UNCW and Stevenson.
